Elevator Pitch No.1- 10A

Feedback would be greatly appreciated. Also do you guys have any tips on not scrambling for words?  My elevator pitch was a little short. Where should I expand more for next time?

Testing the Hypothesis- 9A

  • Who
    • Individuals that do not have this need or mainly those who are a part of a small group in the gym or those who prefer to workout alone. I interviewed an olympic weightlifter(1) that competes at the national level and when asked how often he works out with a partner he replied almost never. He said there are people around as he works out that he talks to but because his program is designed specifically for his strengths and weaknesses he works out alone. However if he were to workout with someone he said he would have no trouble finding someone because he always works out around people he knows. I also interviewed an individual who is a part of the boxing club(2) here at UF. He works out with other individuals in the club and has transitioned into working out at a boxing gym off campus. He does not have the need to find a partner because his training is specialized, so he automatically trains with those like him. Another interviewee has a personal trainer(3). They stated that they strictly train with their personal trainer therefore they would not need such an app. I interviewed an individual after her group fitness class(4) and asked her about if she wants to train with a partner. She stated that right now she solely does the group fitness classes so she would not need a partner. She has met many people through the class and if she were to lift weights she would most likely do it with them. My last interviewee(5) was a normal gym goer that focused on strength training. He stated that although the idea is great he would not use the app. I asked why, and he replied, "I like to train alone. Working with others is too much of a hassle because I don't want to end up training them instead of working out." Therefore he would does not have this need.
  • What
    • From speaking to the fifth individual I interviewed, I realized that this need can be confused with the need for a trainer. The need that I want to solve is for individuals to find a partner to workout with, not for them to find a partner to train them.
  • Why
    • Outsider's do not have this need simply because they do not want to have a partner. The need is based solely on the fact that an individual wants to have a gym partner. Therefore if they do not want a gym partner, the need does not exist for them.

Inside The Boundary
Outside the Boundary
Who
Gym goers that want a partner to workout with.
Gym goers that do not want a partner to workout with. Gym goers who do specialized training such as olympic weightlifting or boxing. Individuals who have a personal trainer or workout in fitness groups.
What
Finding a gym partner.
Finding a trainer.
Why
Difficult to approach others at the gym.
Don’t know who to approach.
Schedules do not line up that well.
Differences in training programs.

Solving the Problem- 8A

My opportunity is a social network for gym goers. I want to create an app that will make it easier for an individual to find a gym partner at their gym. I believe that interactions between individuals are very limited at a commercial gym, making it difficult to find a gym partner. I am proposing an app that will create an online social network for every gym. This will make it easier for individuals to connect. The app will have guidelines that make it specific for every individual. Individuals will select their gym when creating an account, linking them to the gym so others can find them. The app will allow individuals to remain anonymous if they choose so, therefore others cannot stalk them or pick a partner simply based on looks. When looking for a partner, individuals can pick a partner for the day or for however long they want. The app will work like this. Individuals will answer questions and then they will be matched up.
  1. Time and location
  2. Type of workout(Allows individual to upload their current workout for their potential partners to see)
  3. Gender of partner wanted(This makes it easier for individuals to be matched up based on who they want to train with.)
  4. Level of experience of partner wanted(This allows for better pairing of partners)
Once two individuals are matched up, they will be notified and they can agree to workout or not. If they chose to remain anonymous during the matching process , their information will be given to the partner once both agree to workout together. This is a feature that will make the app safer.
There will also be a calendar section for the gym. In this section, individuals will make public when they will be at the gym and their workout plan for the day. This allows others to see and request if they can join in. This is simply at the user's discretion to do so, therefore there is no safety risk at hand.
The app will also act as a social media application, allowing users to post videos and pictures to their accounts.

Testing the Hypothesis- 7A

Social network for gym goers

  • Opportunity: Individuals in commercial gyms typically have a difficult time meeting new people at the gym and finding a partner if they want one.
  • The Who: Individuals in a commercial gym who are seeking a gym partner.
  • The What: People have a difficult time finding a gym partner.
  • The Why: People who go to gyms tend to stay to themselves, making it feel uninviting and difficult for others to approach them.

Testing The Who: The opportunity applies to small gyms as well. However at those gyms people are more connected and have more interactions then commercial gyms. The opportunity is still prevalent for new gym goers at small gyms who don't know anyone. The opportunity also applies to those who are not seeking gym partners but simply friends who go to the gym, however it is mainly for those looking for a partner.

Testing The What: The opportunity deals specifically with people having a difficult time finding a gym partner, however it can be applied to any gym relationship. It is also hard to make friends at the gym.

Testing The Why: Because the gym is filled with people of drastically different body physiques, it can also be a reason for people to have a hard time finding a gym partner. When an individual does not feel confident they are less likely to approach someone else. The fear of rejection is also a why that is possible. Many people are afraid to interact with a stranger because they do not know how the stranger will react.

Interview 1
The individual interviewed has 3+ years of lifting experience, during which she has done both bodybuilding and and strength training. She stated that when she initially started going to the gym she felt awkward and thought it was weird to spark a conversation with another individual. During her time lifting she has only had a partner for periods of time. The partner was her boyfriend. They did not have similar goals at the gym therefore they could only work out once or twice together. She said that she loved working out with a partner because it pushed it but it was so difficult to find someone who wanted to do the same thing she did at the gym. When asked if she has been trying to look for a partner she said she has tried working out with her friends but either they're not as experienced as her, making the workouts more of her training them, or they would rather do cardiovascular exercises instead of lift weights. As I explained the app and its purpose she was ecstatic. She said, "You should really make it happen!" Her enthusiasm implies that she would be a prototypical customer for the app.
Interview 2
The individual interviewed has lifted for approximately 2 years, he is a competitive powerlifter. He stated that he mainly workouts alone simply due to the fact that he does his own programming therefore it doesn't go with anyone else's workout plan. He has no problem working out alone and prefers it because it is a hassle changing the weight after each set for the partner. He does like to bench with others though because it's easier to change the weight plus having a partner makes him less scared if he fails, allowing him to go up in weight. I asked him if he would use this app if it was available and he said maybe, if he can find someone on it that lifts the same weight as him. However he said it would definitely used it if the app also had a section for other amenities at the gym such as basketball. He said it is normally difficult to find people to play against because everyone's skill level ranges so drastically, he doesn't know when to come.
Interview 3
The individual interviewed is a competitive powerlifter at a national level. He has been lifting for over 7 years now. Due to his competitive level he normally has 8-12 week programs leading up to a competition therefore he has to be on a strict workout regimen. He has worked out with people running the same program and competing in the same meet and loved it. He stated that he and his partner were able to push each other through each rep and make the most of their workouts. His strength is due to having a partner throughout his first couple of years lifting he said. As of late he has transitioned to working out alone due to travel. Traveling results in different gym quite often as a result he can't make any connections with anyone to have a partner while there. When asked about the app, he stated that it would be really good to have especially for the road because he can link up with someone before going so he can have a partner while in town. He also stated that during his offseason he would love to use an app as such to find bodybuilders at the gym to workout with, because he wants to work on his physique but doesn't know much about physique training.
Interview 4
My fourth interview was conducted with a male who just started going to the gym this semester. As of right now he said that he is simply going in and doing whatever he feels like doing. He does not have a current workout plan. When asked why not, he stated that he doesn't want to pay for a personal trainer and he doesn't know anyone who works out and can give him one. I asked if he wants a partner or to workout alone but on a program. He replied that he would prefer having a partner especially if the partner knows what they are doing. That way he can stay on track of his workouts and also do it correctly. I asked if I were to train him for a week then let him free on his own if that would work too. The individual replied yes but he would still prefer a partner, he thinks it will be a lot more enjoyable. Also he feels like he'll skip the gym if he's lazy but with a partner he would muster up the energy to go. When asked why he didn't just go up and ask someone in the gym if he can workout with them, he said it's scary. It's scary because everyone looks intimidating and in the zone, he said, and he doesn't want to get in their way. He thought the app was an amazing idea. Stating, "That would definitely be useful for me!"
Interview 5
My last interview was a female lifter with over 4 years of lifting experience. I interviewed her because of her position as an employee in the weight room. She said the faces she sees are pretty regular except when it is New Years or the start of a new semester. When asked if there are more new people who work out alone or new people with partners that make the gym a habit and don't quit, she said definitely those with partners. I asked what her opinion on working out with a partner is and she said some of her best workouts are with a better. She was able to go up in weight on her lifts because she felt motivated by her partner yelling at her. I asked her if she's noticed any trends in interactions between people at the gym. She stated that those who talk either come with each other or know each other and always talk, here and there people nod or wave when they make eye contact but no one is actively trying to meet new people. I asked if she thinks it's hard for people to find a partner for the gym and she said it definitely is because, "you don't know who to ask." She believes if you can have a partner definitely do it because you can learn a lot and have a better experience. When I explained my idea of the app she said, "That sounds interesting. I can see it working here, especially during peak times when new people come."

What I found out from my interviews
After interviewing different individuals that all go to the gym for a different reason I learned that my opportunity is a lot more vast than I thought. After speaking to the individual that loves playing basketball but can't find people to do so, I realized that my opportunity is not simply for lifting weights. It can be applied to any sort of exercise such as sports, biking, jogging and probably even martial arts. From my interview I realized that this opportunity is not seen by others at the moment. From everyone I interviewed, they all decided to not search for a partner, instead they just gave up. No one is actively searching for a way to make this process easier so as of right now I think my opportunity is hidden to the world, but is prominent. I also realized that the app has more potential then simply matching individuals. Even with the add-ons I believe it was still focus on the major opportunity.

Identifying Opportunities in Economic & Regulatory Trends- 6A

Economic Trend: Millennials are trying to find the easiest and most flexible way to earn money

  • Source: https://money.usnews.com/money/personal-finance/family-finance/articles/2018-04-27/how-millennials-are-making-money
  • The opportunity that exists is investing. The opportunity exists because millennials do not want to fit their schedule around work but would rather fit work around their schedule. As a result they want the easiest possible way to earn money.
  • The prototypical customer is a millennial, typically those in high school or college.
  • The opportunity is hard to exploit. It is hard because the millennials need to be convinced to invest their money. Convincing them may be difficult because of the possibility of losing money rather than gaining.
  • I saw this opportunity because I work a retail job that pays hourly and want more money then what I am making. Money I make simply sits in my account and does nothing. Therefore investing has always interested me but I never knew how to I have never done it.

Economic Trend: The amount of money people are willing to spend on fitness is increasing.

  • Source: http://www.foxnews.com/lifestyle/2018/01/23/americans-are-spending-more-on-fitness-than-college-tuition-study-says.html
  • This opportunity exists because it is evident in many social settings. Athleisure clothing has spiked recently and is a common choice of clothing for individuals to wear out, whereas the go to outfit previously were jeans and a t-shirt. People are also trying to live healthier lives as well as look a certain way.
  • The prototypical customer is anyone with an interest in fitness.
  • The opportunity is hard to exploit because it is such a big market. There are already so many well established companies in the market.
  • Fitness is a major component of my life. I am a competitive powerlifter therefore a lot of my money goes into lifting. Initially I thought that I was part of a small group that did so, however once I came to UF I noticed the prevalence of normal individuals using all sorts of gear such as a belt. I then realized that the market for fitness gear is very large and encompasses many individuals not just a select few.

Regulatory Changes: The European Union passed the General Data Protection Regulation.

  • Source: https://www.theverge.com/2018/3/28/17172548/gdpr-compliance-requirements-privacy-notice
  • This opportunity exists because online companies now have to abide be these rules. The change creates a demand in individuals who can revise the term of consents and those who can create data folders for everyone asking the page therefore the user will have access to their own file.
  • The prototypical customers are online companies.
  • The opportunity is easy to exploit when it comes to smaller companies, because they have less resources to use towards these changes.
  • I saw this opportunity because I have always supported smaller companies. Due to this mindset I was able to think about how this new policy affects smaller companies rather than look at how it affected everyone.

Regulatory Changes: California is passing more laws to stop the modification of cars.

  • Source: http://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/codes_displayText.xhtml?lawCode=VEH&division=12.&title=&part=&chapter=1.&article=
  • The opportunity that exists is the creation of street legal aftermarket parts for cars. This opportunity exists because even though there are laws prohibiting modification unless it follows the guidelines, car enthusiasts will continue to do so because that is what they are passionate about.
  • The prototypical customers are car enthusiast is California.
  • This opportunity is somewhat hard to exploit because it will require a lot of research and development to produce aftermarket parts that are better than factory parts but still adhere to regulations passed by the California government.
  • I saw this opportunity because I am a car enthusiast myself. I love modifying my car to make it unique as well as perform better. This opportunity will most likely be seen by other car enthusiast especially those in California that seek to continue modifying their cars without being fined or possibly having their car be impounded.

  • There has been a rise in crime in Alachua County from 2017. A majority of the rise is in violent offenses such as murder, robbery, and aggravated assault. A major rise is seen in car burglaries. It went from 341 during this period in 2017 to 479 in 2018. The rise is connected to an increase in offense by juveniles. More young individuals are committing crimes than before, this includes violent crimes as well such as murder.

  • Florida's lakes and rivers have become damaged due to excessive withdrawal of the water as well as little or poor regulation of discharge into the water. A cap has not been placed on the withdrawal of water from underground sources. Instead public leaders are using tax money to fund water supply projects. Most of the projects are costly and are flawed flow models.
  • Florida's water supply is decreasing and tax money is being spent to fix it, but is not.
  • Florida residents. Those who pay taxes are affected more.

Forming an Opportunity Belief- 4A

I believe there is an opportunity in the fitness world. Many individuals workout alone. Some choose to, but others have no choice. They either do not know anyone else who follows the same program as them or is available at the same time as them. This typically causes new gym goers to either quit going or continue to do so with insufficient knowledge about the movements they are performing. I believe that creating an app can solve this problem. The app will anonymously connect those who are working the same muscle groups at the same time at the same gym. This will make it easier for individuals to find a training partner. Pairing will be based on many factors such as which gender you would like to workout with, their experience, and the day's workout. Through the pairing system inexperienced individuals can meet those who are experienced and help them as well. Individuals can also publicly share their workout programs. This will allow individuals to stop using random online workouts that are not benefitting them. As a result through this app, individuals can be more connected with one another at the gym and find better results with their training. The prototypical customer is any gym goer that does not have a coach or personal trainer. I am 90% confident that this opportunity exists.

1. Early twenties female, intermediate level of fitness knowledge
  • How long have you been going to the gym?
  • " About 3 years."

  •  "I made the program I am currently doing."
  • Do you think the program is actually working?
  •  "I think my program is working, but I may be overworking and I'm sure there are ways to improve it."
  • Would you rather do an online program or one someone recommended?
  • "I don't have a preference to online programs or one someone recommended. I do, however need it to be from someone that either has qualifications or that I trust to be knowledgeable in fitness."
  • Do you workout alone or have a partner?
  •  "I workout alone."
  • Do you want a partner?

  • How easy is it to make friends at the gym? Explain your answer.
  • "I feel like it is pretty hard to make friends at the gym. Many people have their headphones in and are doing their own thing. This can make reaching out and trying to start conversations somewhat intimidating."
Reflection:
This individual has a tough time finding a workout partner even though she would really love to have one. It is difficult for her because she has a different approach to the gym than other girls. This individual is the ideal customer for the app. The app will satisfy her unmet need.
 2. Early twenties male, average level of fitness knowledge
  • How long have you been going to the gym?
  • "I've been going to the gym for a total of 2 years but it hasn't been consistent."
  • How knowledgeable are you with fitness? Workouts, nutrition, etc
  •  "I would say I'm just a beginner on topics such as workouts and nutrition, I just know the basics."

  • Do you workout alone or have a partner?
  •  "I workout alone currently but am looking forward to working out with my girlfriend soon."
  • Do you want a partner?
  •  "Yes, I feel like there are a lot of benefits in working out with a partner."
  • How difficult is it to find a partner?
  •  "Sometime it's hard cause you and your partner don't have the same time in their schedule to meet up and workout together."
  • Would you want your partner to be highly knowledgeable relating to fitness or it doesn't matter?
  •  "It doesn't matter to me, we can both learn and grow as we go."
  • How difficult was it to learn how to properly execute the movements?
  •  "Not difficult. If I didn't know how to properly perform the exercise I would just search online or watch YouTube and learn."
  • What motivates you?
  •  "What motivates me in the gym is simply self-improvement and growth. I want to get stronger in general. Also I want to achieve a nice/bigger physique to cover myself in tattoos. That is one of my goals."
  • Does having a partner make you fell more motivated/ accountable?
  •  "Yes I have a cousin who asks me how the program is going and if there is something I would like to change about it. I also have my girlfriend who supports me in pretty much everything I do in life."
  • How easy is it to make friends at the gym? Explain your answer.
  • "I've never really tried to make friends at the gym, I feel like people just have their headphones in and are there just to do what they gotta do. But I have made friends playing basketball after my workouts."
Reflection:
This individual would also like to have a workout partner but can't find one due to scheduling issues. I thought that individuals would want to be paired with those who are more knowledgeable so that they can learn from them. However this individual does not mind if their partner is more or less knowledgeable.

3. Early twenties female, above average level of fitness knowledge
  • How long have you been going to the gym?
  • "I've been active my whole life but I didn't start regularly going to the gym until about junior year in high school."
  • How knowledgeable are you with fitness? Workouts, nutrition, etc
  • "I’m not an expert, but I research a lot of workout and nutrition theories in my free time, and read a lot of nutrition books, so I’d like to think I’m fairly knowledgeable, but i know there’s a lot I’m missing.
  • How did you get the program you are currently doing?
  •  "I make a goal that I want to achieve and then look up various workout plans and from that inspiration I put together my own program."
  • Do you think the program is actually working?
  •  "Well, it’s only been about 2 days since I started this new one, but I’m sore today so I think that’s a good sign!"
  • Would you rather do an online program or one someone recommended?
  • "It doesn’t really matter to me, I’ve done both before. I think it’s easier to find an online program though."
  • Do you workout alone or have a partner?
  • "It depends. I will go with people if they are available, but I will also go alone. I used to only go alone and I didn’t start going with a partner until last year."
  • Do you want a partner?
  • "It depends. I typically like going with someone because it’s more fun, but if they aren’t going to push me I don’t like it. I love having a partner when they keep me motivated and accountable."
  • How difficult is it to find a partner?
  • " It’s not really difficult to find any partner, but finding one that has similar goals as me, and that will help me reach my goals is a lot harder. It’s especially hard with girls because a lot of times all they want to do is cardio when I want to focus on strength. "
  • Would you want your partner to be highly knowledgeable relating to fitness or it doesn't matter?
  • "Ideally, I’d like them to be knowledgeable, so they can help me make sure I am doing everything right. However as long as they are as willing to push themselves as I am I’m good. I also don’t want someone who intimidates me because then I purposely won’t try so I don't feel judged for my hardest."
  • How difficult was it to learn how to properly execute the movements?
  • " Not really that hard. Some movements are harder than others, but for the most part I’ll watch a video if I’m unsure and then I usually get it."
  • What motivates you?
  •  "Seeing progress and working towards my goal."
  • Does having a partner make you fell more motivated/ accountable?
  •  "That depends on who my partner is. If I have someone who is working hard, then yes I’m more motivated, but if I’m with a lazy partner then I won’t work as hard."
  • How easy is it to make friends at the gym? Explain your answer.
  • "I don’t make friends at the gym. I don’t really go to socialize and meet people. I go in, workout and leave. I don’t think I’ve ever met someone new at the gym. I’d like to, but I keep to myself."
Reflection:
The individual stated that it is hard to find other girls to workout with because she likes to lift weights whereas others tend to not. From this interview I realized that my opportunity has many subjective factors that can make or break a users experience. For example this individual stated that proper execution of movements was not hard, which can cause her to be paired with an intermediate lifter even though her form is truly not adequate enough to lift at that level.

Summary:
The basis of my original opportunity is still there. Percentage wise it would be about 80% of my original opportunity. The main difference is that I assumed novice and average gym goers would want to be paired with higher level gym goers. This however is not true. Therefore my opportunity now includes a wider customer base. The new opportunity is for any gym goer who simply wants a partner. I think that entrepreneurs should adapt to the customers' feedback but stay true to the original intent of their opportunity. If the entrepreneur were to adapt too much from the feedback they will be trying to please too many different groups which will cause the opportunity to no longer exist because it will be too broad.

Bug List- 2A

20 things that bug me and why they occur:
1. Traffic going to work at the Oaks Mall at 7:30am during the week.
Why does it exist? The traffic is a result of the congestion produced by parents taking their children to school at Myra Terwilliger Elementary which is across the mall. There is also only one lane for a 3.5 mile stretch.

Reaction:
I had a very difficult time coming up with 20 different bugs. I seldom let bugs bother me because I normally find a way around it. Therefore to discover the bugs I had to analyze how I've adjusted my daily activities. At first I struggled because I was narrow minded and I kept thinking about bugs that can be solved by a product. After reading the assignment over I realized that it was any bug in general, which made the assignment much easier.

My Entrepreneurship story- 3A

In the May of 2017, I discovered a clothing brand called, GuavaFit. Initially I thought it was just like every other fitness clothing brand, however it was not. The philosophy behind, GuavaFit, was live a happy and healthy lifestyle. This did not mean that your healthy lifestyle had to revolve around the gym. I had a phone conversation with the entrepreneur, AJ, who created the brand and its philosophy. While on the phone he told me that his lifestyle was the gym. He loved to workout and that is why he initially created the brand. Shortly after he met individuals that sustained healthy lifestyles through other means, such as martial arts, calisthenics, or even music. Even though music sounds like an odd way to live a healthy lifestyle, members of the brand lived through music. Music was their escape, a way for them to relieve their body of stress and bring them to a state of relaxation and happiness. After speaking with him, I joined the brand as well. The brand was located in California and I lived in Florida. During this time I saw AJ’s hopes of expanding the brand, he wanted to make it national. Currently the brand carries collections that represents other parts of America. For example the Miami Vibes collection is targeted to those in the Florida area. While wanting to expand his brand nationally, AJ hasn’t lost sight of the true philosophy of, GuavaFit. The collections that release center around the same common themes, positive vibes and healthy lifestyles. My time with the brand and working with AJ, exposed me to the realization that even in big markets little brands can thrive.

I enrolled in ENT 3003 so that I can obtain a minor in entrepreneurship. I want to learn about entrepreneurship because my goal in life is to create a training center for athletes. The training facility will specialize in improving the physical aspects of an athlete, such as speed, strength, and agility. It will concentrate on training high level athletes, however I also want to train athletes still in school who do not have the funds to compete with others. I grew up in a relatively poor neighborhood. The main escape for the kids there were through sports. Many of them had tremendous talent, but they lacked the physical component and the build for their sport. Therefore they could not make it far. I want to help them by creating a training facility like this. I hope to learn the basic fundamentals of creating and operating my own training facility.
